Deconstructing Key Art

This key art for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was designed by me, Oz de Leon. To create it, I used the studio-provided 3D models of Kitsune, along with graphical assets from the game's main key art, including the signature Nixie tube clock numbers and Kenji text.

The images below walk you through the composition of the key art.

For this project, the game studio provided me with dozens of poses for the Kitsune 3D model. We worked with the marketing department to choose the final pose, ultimately deciding on the one where she is crossing her arms to best fit the key art's composition and tone.

Starting with a smoky background that had a very subtle fire, I then added a shade of purple to match the aesthetic of Season Five.

I incorporated several graphical elements borrowed from the main seasonal key art. I added vertical binary code and Kanji text, giving it a Matrix-like effect, along with randomized, stylized numbers that resemble a Nixie tube clock.

Next, I focused on perfecting the Kitsune model. I started by fixing her eyepatch strap, which was clipping into her face, and then adjusted the material to have less light reflection so it wouldn't appear plastic.

To give her hair a fuller look and enhance the red highlights, I hand-drew and painted individual strands. I then added a subtle green glow to her two-way radio. I also color-corrected the entire model, adding a warm red tone to the right side of her face and uniform to create the effect of a red directional light. Finally, I placed a red glow behind her to improve separation from the background.
