Who I am and what I do.

Hi! I'm Oscar, a multidisciplinary designer and creative leader based in SoCal. I am passionate about using my skills to create meaningful work, as well as helping others find that same passion. Here is my story:

I was born in Guatemala City and lived in Michigan for a few years before relocating to the west coast.

My dad worked in telecommunications. I was lucky that his job allowed me to get hands-on experience in the creative process from a very young age.

One of my earliest memories was when I was 9 years old and my dad took me to his office building for the first time. He showed me the receiver racks which looked like a modern server room.

My father explained how satellite TV receivers work. He said that they decode radio signals from space that are captured by a parabolic antenna. The decoded signals are then broadcast to TVs across the country. We then moved to another office where technicians were using a device called a switch to insert commercials into the broadcast signal.

Then my dad gave me the opportunity to actually insert commercials into a broadcast. I'll never forget how excited and nervous I was. I took my time and did my best, and I was grateful that he was there to help me if I needed it.

The words my dad said to me that day have stayed with me ever since, and I strive to live my professional life by them:

“To be a great leader, you need to be interested in what your people do. Ask them questions, listen to their feedback, and learn from their stories. This is crucial to making informed decisions."

My father instilled in me a curiosity for discovery. By the age of 14, I had shot and edited my first commercial using a linear editing system. This process helped me understand how non-linear editing works. In college, two of my TV shows were picked up by a national broadcast station. I was responsible for shooting, creating all the graphics, and editing the pilots which was an invaluable learning experience.

While in school, I was drawn to semiology, the study of how symbols are used to create meaning in art and communication. I was particularly interested in how the psychology of communication can influence the way that symbols are interpreted. I came to realize that by understanding how people interpret symbols and how they are influenced by communication, designers can create more effective and user-friendly solutions.

From that point on, I focused on visual design and web design. I knew that I had to truly understand how the web is built, if I wanted to design for it. So, I started my journey into web development and design. Learning web technologies has shown me firsthand the importance of designing solutions that are equitable and accessible, regardless of the device being used.

Now as a design leader, I want to cultivate a culture of curiosity and learning among my team. I want them to be constantly asking questions, exploring new ideas, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

As a father of two, I want to instill in my children the importance of curiosity and the joy of discovery. I want to help them learn and grow, and to explore the world around them with wonder and excitement.

Raising neurodivergent children has been a rewarding learning experience for me. I have learned new ways of communicating, become more empathetic, and gained a deeper understanding of disabilities. This has made me even more passionate about designing products and services that are equitable for all people.

To whomever is reading this, I hope that one day we can meet and you can tell me your story, what drives you every day, and all the experiences that make you who you are.

Interests

I enjoy video games, spending time with my family, and learning new things. I'm a big fan of The Legend of Zelda, FIFA, Assassin's Creed, and Call of Duty. I also love watching YouTube fails with my son, who is a smart kid who loves to talk about geopolitics and history. With my seven year old daughter, I love playing tickle monster, having dance fights, and watching Seinfeld, her favorite television show. And with my wife, we love to watch funny TikTok videos together.

In addition to spending time with my family, I also like reading sci-fi, nonfiction books, and comic books. My all-time favorite graphic novel is Batman: Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean. I'm also a big fan of punk rock music, especially from the 90s, and 2000s. I used to be the drummer in a punk rock band that toured Central America. It was a wild ride!

I am also a fan of horror and comedy films. Some of my favorite horror movies include The Exorcist, Shaun of the Dead, Evil Dead, and 28 Days Later. Some of my favorite comedies are Idiocracy, Rushmore, The Big Lebowski, Office Space, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
